intolerance and suspicion
Sam Severson
immigration restrictionImmigration was unrestricted before WWI but after the war the American industry did not need immigrants to keep the economy up. In 1924, congress passed laws limiting the number of immigrants to 2% of each nationality and completely banned Asians. Nativism is the term referring to the want to lower social and political status of foreigners. It was a big factor in the 20's.

KKKThe Ku Klux Klan was a group who used terrorist tactics to intimidate former slaves, Roman Catholics, Jews, foreigners, divorcees, and bootleggers. Their strength and growth showed the intolerance of many groups during the 1920's. Many people were killed at voting booths by the KKK because they thought they voted for the opposing group.

Red scare and palmer raidsPalmer Raids were attempts by Attorney General Mitchell Palmer to deport anarchists and communists. They were often illegal and hurt innocent people and deported thousands. Many Americans were still afraid of a communism or anarchist takeover like what happened with Russia's Bolshevik revolution. This fear soon became known as the Red Scare. After WW1, Americans were afraid to get sucked into another one and wanted no part in foreign ideas or affairs.

Sacco and VanzettiSacco and Vanzetti were Italian anarchists who were convicted of murdering two men during the robbery of a shoe factory in 1920. Despite multiple witnesses and forensics expert testimonials, they were executed because of their connection to anarchy. Protests took place around the world and outraged many people. This also shows how scared the United States was and how little they wanted to do with foreigners.

Scopes trialThe Scopes Monkey Trial was over teaching creation in schools. A high school teacher in Tennessee taught evolution and it upset the quiet town. It went to the supreme court of Tennessee as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. It was very well broadcast and reporters from all over the country were there. The older generation wanted creation to be taught and new ideas if evolution were shocking.

Narrowed choices for people? The Scopes Monkey trial definitely limited peoples options. People would have to accept creationism even if they believe in evolution because others would reject you. Being an outsider in any way is dangerous and that is seen through the Sacco and Vanzetti trial.
Transform peoples lives? People were so afraid of foreigners that it controlled them. Innocent people were deported and left everything behind. It directly affected their lives and the lives of people around them. People has to blend into American culture for fear of Palmer and his power.
