Women
Sam Severson
FlappersWomen of the 1920's were called flappers. they wore makeup, bobbed hair, short skirts, and listened to jazz. They went to night parties with guys and drove cars. They also pushed women's roles by working outside of the home and being individual. Women could now vote and the flappers motivated women to use that right and have a say in politics. These years were also time of great conflict between conservative old views and the new generations views.
Women's movenentWomen were gaining more and more freedoms as the years went on. Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, NY. Even though it was soon closed down, it showed that women were not afraid to take things into their own hands. The 19th Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote and safety measures were enforced in the workplace.
Progressive era vs roaring 20'sThe years before WW1 was a time of industrial growth but was still stuck in the 1800's. Women were expected to be seen and not heard. They stayed home and took care of the children. Some women had unsafe factory jobs. The Roaring 20' changed all of that. Women soon became their own people and were not looking for a quiet family and children against their mothers wishes. They looked for adventure and nightlife.

thinking like a historian - change and continuity
Who has benefited from the change? The women have definitely benefited from this social change. They refused to be quiet housewives and are willing to fight their social barriers. They knew that change would not happen overnight.
Who has not benefited? The older generation and men have not benefited because they are still stuck in their mental barriers about women and that will only cause tension.
